According to sources, the main source of income for people in this region is cotton and maize cultivation. For four years, limestone mines has been operating on the border of Varagupadi. Hence, several lorries have been transporting limestone to the cement plant in Ariyalur.
Amid the hustle and bustle of lorries, farmers have been struggling to reach their fields for work. The villagers had submitted several petitions to the Alathur taluk office and the Collectorate seeking action on this, but in vain. A proposal for having separate roads for heavy vehicles carrying limestone from private cement factories.
Under the consideration of the Tamil Nadu government, minister Mr. Velmurugan raised additional concerns over the environmental impact. He consequently pointed out the accidents caused by cement industries in Ariyalur district. Thus, speed governors have been installed in the vehicles carrying limestone from private cement factories. The Minister said, “These ensures heavy vehicles using tarpaulin sheets to cover the goods, thereby protecting fine dust from the limestone did not affect the environment.”
Morever, equipment to monitor pollution levels prescribed by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) were installed to monitor all private and State-run cement industries in Ariyalur District.
