LIMESTONE PRODUCT INFORMATION
Limestone as a natural resource has been a primary raw material to various industries like Cement, Steel, Paints and Chemicals. The quality of limestone in the UAE is regarded as one of the best in the world. UAE alone is responsible for supplying close to 40% of the world Limestone amounting to US$500 Million annually. The growth is almost 30% in value.
In 2017 the Federal Government of UAE allotted the second biggest Limestone Quarry in the Emirate of Fujairah. This is an Open Cast Mining operation from a single Mine source. The company has established a state of the art 3-stage crushing and material handling system from Sandvik, Sweden with an annual capacity of 4 Million Metric Tons. The size fractions can be supplied as per order or in the standard sizes.
LIMESTONE COMPOSITION
ALUMINIUM OXIDE – maximum content (0.30%)
Aluminium Oxide is a white, colourless, odourless and insoluble crystalline substance. It is diminished to maximum 0.30% in the limestone composition.
CALCIUM OXIDE – minimum content (53.50%)
Calcium Oxide is a widely used alkali substance known as quicklime, burnt lime or calcia. The Presence of CaO ranges from minimum of 53.50%.
IRON OXIDE – maximum content (0.20%)
Iron Oxide is a chemical compound found in rocks and minerals including limestone. The presence of Fe2O3 remains at its maximum of 0.20%.
MAGNESIUM OXIDE – maximum content (1.20%)
Magnesium Oxide is found in the standard composition of Limestone. The presence of MgO is maintained at a maximum level of 1.20%.
MOISTURE – maximum content (0.50 %)
In order to precondition the material properly, Limestone is dried.
PHOSPHORUS – maximum content (0.05%)
The high amount of Phosphorus (P4) causes lime to become embrittled, thus reducing the toughness.
SILICON DIOXIDE – maximum content (1.00%)
Limestone rock contains crystalline Silicon Dioxide (SiO2) in different quantities.
SULPHUR – maximum content (0.05%)
Presence of Sulphur should be lower than 0.1% for the limestone to be dense, massive and non-fretting on burning. We have less than 0.05%.
LIMESTONE USAGE
Limestone uses vary in different industry types. Being an essential raw material in the production of iron and steel, around 140 -160 million tons of Limestone is being globally consumed by the Iron and Steel industry, making the UAE world’s biggest limestone supplier and exporter. In the construction industry, Limestone is used as a significant aggregate to build roads, buildings, and make cement and concrete.
Presently, the limestone in UAE is mainly exploited for construction aggregate. UAE is said to have the best quality of limestone in terms of chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties. This fact is supported by the British Geological Survey (BGS). A third of the limestone production of the Northern Emirates of UAE has been found of high purity which is used as a raw material for the production of paint, plastic, caulks, food and pharmaceuticals, animal feed, glass, etc.
